To rank on Google Maps in Bangkok, complete and verify your Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate primary category, keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere, earn and reply to genuine reviews, and publish a location page on your website. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, so no one can buy or guarantee a Maps position.

When someone in Bangkok searches “dentist near me”, “coffee Thonglor” or “accounting firm Silom”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. That block, often called the local pack, and Google Maps itself are where many local customers choose who to call. Local SEO is the work of earning a place there. This guide explains how Google ranks local results, what to set up first, and how to keep improving in a city as dense and competitive as Bangkok.
What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the part of search engine optimization that helps a business appear for searches with local intent: searches that include a place (“in Sukhumvit”), use “near me”, or come from someone nearby. It covers three areas:
- Your Google Business Profile, the listing that appears on Maps and in the local pack.
- Your website, especially location and service pages that confirm where you are and what you do.
- Your reputation and mentions across the web: reviews, directories, local media and partners.
It is related to, but different from, classic SEO for your website. A business can rank well on Maps with a modest website, and a strong website can still be missing from Maps if its profile is incomplete.
How does Google rank businesses on Google Maps?
Google explains this in its help article Tips to improve your local ranking on Google. Local results are based mainly on three factors:
| Factor | What it means | What you can influence |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches the search | Categories, services, description, website content |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher or the place in the search | Your real address (you cannot change this for ranking) |
| Prominence | How well known your business is | Reviews, mentions, links, overall web presence |
Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. That is worth remembering when anyone promises a “guaranteed top 3 on Maps”.
How should you set up your Google Business Profile?
Your profile is the foundation. Work through it in this order:
- Claim and verify the profile in your business’s own Google account, not a staff member’s personal account or an agency’s.
- Use your real business name. Adding keywords or locations to the name (“Best Dentist Bangkok Sukhumvit”) breaks Google’s guidelines and can lead to suspension.
- Choose the most specific primary category that describes your main business, then add secondary categories only if they are true.
- Enter your address exactly as it appears on your website, with the correct pin on the map. Service-area businesses that visit customers can hide their address and set service areas instead.
- Add hours, including holidays. Thai public holidays are a common gap.
- List your services or products with short descriptions.
- Add real photos of your premises, team and work.
- Write a description that says what you do and where, in natural language.
Should your profile be in Thai, English or both?
Bangkok has a large bilingual audience, so think about both languages. Your business name should be your real name, which may be in Thai, English or both as it appears on your signage. Your description and posts can be in the language most of your customers use, and your website can carry the other language on dedicated pages. Customers write reviews in whichever language they prefer; reply in the same language.
Why does NAP consistency matter?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. When these match everywhere your business is listed, Google can be more confident they all refer to the same business. In Bangkok, inconsistencies often creep in through:
- different spellings of soi and road names in Thai and English
- old phone numbers on directories
- a building name on one listing and a street address on another
Pick one format for each language and use it on your website, profile and directories. Our sister agency Digital Agency Bangkok has a practical guide to getting your business name and address right on Google Maps. Our technical SEO glossary explains NAP and other terms you will meet.
How do reviews affect your Maps ranking?
Reviews feed prominence, and they influence whether people click. Google notes that high-quality, positive reviews can improve visibility. Good practice:
- Ask every happy customer, with a direct link or QR code to your review form.
- Reply to every review, positive and negative, politely and quickly.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards in exchange for positive ones. It breaks Google’s policies and can remove reviews or your listing.
- Do not review-gate by only asking customers you expect to be happy.
What should your website do for local SEO?
Your website confirms what your profile says and adds detail Google can use for relevance.
- A location page for each real branch, with the address, map, hours, phone, parking or BTS/MRT directions and local photos.
- Service pages that match the services listed on your profile.
- LocalBusiness structured data on your contact or location page. Google’s local business structured data documentation explains the fields.
- A link from your profile to the matching location page, not just the home page.
- Answer-first content for the questions locals ask, which also helps you appear in AI answers. Our 30-day AEO and GEO checklist explains the approach.
Do not create pages for areas where you have no presence just to rank there. Thin “doorway” pages for every district are against Google’s guidelines.
Which local mentions and citations help?
Beyond reviews, prominence grows when trusted local sources mention you: chamber of commerce and trade association listings, local news coverage, event sponsorships, supplier and partner websites, and reputable Thai directories. Quality matters more than volume, so focus on sources your customers actually use.
What are the most common local SEO mistakes in Bangkok?
We see the same problems again and again when we review Bangkok businesses:
- Duplicate profiles for the same location, often created by different staff or agencies over the years. They split reviews and confuse Google.
- The wrong primary category, for example a broad category when a more specific one exists.
- A pin in the wrong place, which is easy to miss in large buildings, malls and long sois.
- No website link, or a link to an unrelated page.
- Unanswered reviews, especially negative ones, which put off customers who read them.
- Profiles owned by a former agency or employee, so the business cannot update its own listing.
Fixing these is usually the fastest local SEO win, because it removes problems rather than waiting for new signals to build.
How do you measure local SEO results?
Track a few numbers each month:
| Metric | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Profile views, searches, calls, direction requests, website clicks | Google Business Profile performance |
| Clicks from the profile to your site | GA4, using UTM tags on the profile link |
| Local queries and location page impressions | Google Search Console |
| Review count and average rating | Google Business Profile |
Look at trends over several months rather than daily changes, because local results vary with the searcher’s location.
How much does local SEO cost, and should you hire help?
The basics in this guide can be done in-house. Help makes sense when you have several branches, a competitive category, or bilingual content to maintain. For what affects pricing, see how much SEO, AEO and GEO cost in Bangkok, and for choosing a provider, read how to choose an SEO company in Bangkok.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?
It depends on competition and how complete your profile was to begin with. Profile fixes can show quickly; reviews and mentions build over months.
Can I rank on Maps in an area where I have no address?
Generally you rank best near your real location. Service-area businesses can set service areas, but you cannot fake an address.
Can I pay Google for a higher Maps ranking?
No. Local rankings cannot be bought. Local ads can appear on Maps, but they are labelled as ads.
Should I add keywords to my business name?
No. Use your real business name. Keyword stuffing can get your profile suspended.
